Madekwe was born South London, England into an ethnically diverse family. Her father is Nigerian and Swiss and the mother of her is English. She grew up in a south London community estate, where she attended The Brit School at age fourteen. She received her Bachelor of Arts in acting from The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
